THE GREAT WAR MUSEUM

SS 47 Borgo Valsugana exit, Ex Mulino Spagolla, Vicolo Sottochiesa 11 – Borgo Valsugana

Held in the old Mulino Spagolla (mill) on the river in one of Borgo’s historical centre’s most spectacular corners, the Great War in Valsugana and on the Lagorai Permanent Exhibition is the result of many years’ work by the Historical-Cultural Association of Western Valsugana and Tesino. Among its aims are to conserve, study and evaluate bibliographic, archival and photographic evidence regarding the Great War in the area between the Altopiano dei Sette Comuni, Valsugana and the Lagorai-Cima d’Asta chain.

What the museum has to offer

The exhibition opened in October 2002 but was expanded and radically renovated at the end of 2005, it occupies two large closely linked yet greatly different areas. The first part is held in a bright and spacious room with columns, where the windows alternate with photographs and model environments. Divided according to themes, this area gradually introduces the visitor to the drama of the conflict.
The evolution of the military operation is illustrated by photographs of the mountain battle fields and the destruction felt by the villages in the valleys. Even the contemporary progress of “arte della guerra” (art in war) unwinds progressively, ranging from evolution to headgear (from caps to metal helmets) changes in battle uniforms, to the modernisation of individual weapons to the progressive loss in importance of the bayonet and the apparition of the trench daggers.
